Ladies and gentle, it is another day to celebrate a passionate Nigerian here on our Rebrand Nigeria Ambassador Series!
He is popularly known as “Lamboginny” a nickname his father gave to him that has become his stage name. He is showing great compassion for prisoners both home and abroad through his music and philanthropic movement. His name is Yinka Lawanson and he is a singer and global prison ambassador.
Yinka is an afro-dancehall musician and a global prison and anti-drug ambassador. He is also AFI representative at United Nations in Vienna and New York. Through his music, he has advocated for prison reformation and brought hope to inmates. He is the first Nigerian singer, to organize music therapy concerts in Nigeria, UK and US prisons where over 12,000 incarcerated inmates (juveniles, males and females) have been impacted positively.
In 2009, he held his first performance in a Nigerian prison where the inspiration to continue was birth. He founded a fund-raising initiative called Saving All Lives Together (SALT) which funds music therapy for inmates, covers legal fees for wrongly imprisoned individuals and those who are unable to afford bail. To this effect, Mr Lawanson has facilitated the release of over 70 juveniles in some Nigerian prisons. He plans on gaining freedom for 240 prisoners with minor offences who are awaiting trials in prisons in Nigeria.
Since 2010, he has been the National Ambassador to Nigeria Prison Service, Ambassador to National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), 2013 and 2014 and an Ambassador to Young Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI). Yinka is a board member of the West Africa Women Association since 2015.
In 2019, Yinka attended the 68th United Nations Civil Society Conference, Utah, US, dressed up in overall prison attire where he spoke on the importance of prison reform and inclusiveness in society.
He has also founded I Believe in Africa Initiative (NGO) and I Believe in Prison Reformation Movement. Mr Lawanson’s tremendous impact in prisons has had him featured on CNN, BBC, Korea broadcasting service, Channels Tv and many more.
His projects are geared towards, decongesting Nigerian prisons using the hashtag #kirikiridonfull, reforming the judiciary system, renovating clinics, libraries and classrooms at juvenile prisons.
