We are passionate about the narrative of our country Nigeria and that is why we are relentlessly showcasing the extraordinary endeavors of young and talented Nigerians. Today, we celebrate a young Medical Doctor who together with a team of other Doctors are fighting against mental health stigmatization in Nigeria.
He is Dr Victor Ugo; Founder and President of Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI). MANI is a non-profit organization that focuses on raising awareness on mental health illnesses and challenges. The organization helps service users gain access to professional assistance and support from mental health specialists. The organization was launched in 2016 by a group of young doctors and supportive individuals, spearheaded by Dr Victor Ugo.
MANI is the largest youth run and youth focused mental health organization in Nigeria. They have successfully utilized online chats and picture messages on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to raise awareness about mental health and discourage mental health myths that have been propagated among the masses for many years. Their website, blog site and TV and radio channels are avenues used by the organization to reach the public. They have a suicide/distress hotline that has helped many receive specialized care. MANI has over 20,000 followers who are spreading information about the purpose and benefits of the campaign globally thus, creating channels to assists thousands of peoples.
Victor has many years of experience in health advocacy particularly mental health and disability. He also co-founds Strength in Disability Africa; an upcoming magazine publication that brings to view the positive accomplishments of people who are labeled disabled and therefore, using the medium to inspire others. He is very passionate about social entrepreneurship, consultancy and non-profit growth.
