Hello good people, we welcome you to another episode of the Rebrand Nigeria Ambassadors Series!

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action is a major area requiring urgent attention to combat climate change and its impacts. The extreme weather changes experienced all around the world is alarming as cases of reduced food production, droughts, floods etc are damaging resources and affecting the livelihood of people.

However, a very passionate agriculturist is combating ozone layer depletion, reducing erosion and promoting the planting of tree-seeds. He uses technology in agriculture to encourage environmental sustainability, economic empowerment and alleviation of poverty through the company he co-founded.

His name is Olalekan Ayodele Sipasi; Co-founder and CEO of ProtectOzone Sustainable Livelihood Initiative. The organisation addresses the problems of climate change and the need to protect the ozone layer by promoting citizen consciousness through training programs, advocacies, peer-education, awareness campaigns, resource development etc.

Over 4,000 children, women, youth and farmers have directly benefited from the company’s innovative climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practises thus, improving their livelihood. They have successfully distributed over 25,000 tree-seeds, fruits and vegetable seeds and established demo farms in many communities.  These underdeveloped communities not only tackle climate change but in return produce food needed to sustain society and gain profit from the sale of their produce.

Olalekan holds a Bachelors in Technology (B.Tech) in Animal Production and Health from The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. He also has a  Masters in Animal Science from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. In addition, Sipasi obtained a certificate in Business Administration from African Management Institute, Nairobi, Kenya and Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan-African University, Lagos. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Horticulture and Natural Resources from Kansas State University, USA.

Olalekan has received many awards and recognitions for his remarkable innovations and dogged enthusiasm to combat climate change. He created what he called the “Mobile Kitchen Garden” that uses wastes to combat ozone layer depletion, reduce erosion and simultaneously produce vegetables. This innovation won him the 2015 Hidden Eco Heroes Award given to him by Samsung Engineering’s Tunza Eco-generation, Seoul, South Korea. He is listed among the Top 10 Go Green in the City Ambassador of the Schneider Electric, 2016. He is a recipient of The Lion’s Awards, as The Most Influential Participant of Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), West Africa Cohort 3, West Africa Centre for Cooperate Social Responsibility.

In 2017, Sipasi was among the 23 fellows of Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative selected to be part of the Economic Empowerment Team of the fellowship. As a member of the team, he trained 23 indigent Youths in Lagos on Sustainable Best Agricultural Practice (Agribusiness, Poultry and Vegetable Production). The youths also received training on City Smart and Sustainable Agricultural Practice to empower them economically in order to fight hunger and alleviate poverty. He is currently listed among 100 Most Influential Young Nigerians 2019.

These and many more are the achievements of Olalekan. Indeed, he is truly an #ambassador worthy of recognition.

This campaign is powered by the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa.

God bless Nigeria!!
