Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition of the “Hope for the Youths” Series from the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa.
Like we reminded you in the last edition, our primary objective at the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa is to change the world by raising a new generation of young leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators from the African continent.
To achieve this tall objective, we implement a number of impact making projects, prominent among them is the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge, which is our idea pitching and grant competition for the benefits of young people who have ideas and talents that can be transformed into business ventures and social enterprises.
The Hope for Youths Series is designed to showcase the impact of the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge in reducing unemployment in the country.
In this edition, we are featuring our star prize winner at the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge: Abuja Edition, Mr. Ugochukwu Mbakam, the CEO of Mupo Energy.
See what he shared with us:
“With the N1,000,000 (one million naira) grant I won from the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge, my company, Mupo Energy gained traction in our cooking gas energy business by making revenue from sales of not only gas but cooking gas accessories.
Mupo Energy is looking to scale as the cooking energy needs in Apo area is very high. Mupo’s next milestone within the coming month is to raise external finance of about 200 million naira to build a full blown gas plant in Apo Area to meet the energy needs of the increasing population, offer cleaner energy services and ensure that more Nigerians switch from dirty cooking fuel (kerosene/firewood) to cleaner cooking gas (LPG).
Did you known that out of about 200 million Nigerians, only 8 million Nigerians use cooking gas, meaning that over 190 million Nigerians still use either kerosene or firewood?
The feedback video clicks of two of our clients: Smiggs and Jemila are just the beginning of our journey. Our vision is to strengthen and improve access to cleaner energy across Nigeria through innovation across the LPG (liquified petroleum sector)”.
FEEDBACK FROM OUT CUSTOMERS
Anthony is a young bachelor living in Apo area in Abuja. He uses 5kg cylinder to meet his cooking energy needs. His gas rarely lasts for a significant period of time since he doesn’t really cook as a bachelor. When he came in contact with Mupo Cooking Energy Services, he loved their idea of using an accurate digital scale and offering of home delivery services. Anthony enjoys the home delivery services at his beck and call. More importantly, his gas lasts for a sustained period of time due to the use of an accurate digital scale by our company.
Jemila is a house wife who uses 12.5kg cylinder to meet her cooking energy needs. With lots of mouth to feed in the home, consisting of about 2 children, 3 relatives and her husband, the cooking energy demand is quite high. Jemila fell in love with one of our value propositions on a poster which says 1kg is 1kg. As short as those words were, Jemila said they were compelling and powerful enough to convince her to try a refill with us and then she noticed that her gas lasts much longer. Today Jemila is one of our favourite customers.
This year was declared the Gas Year by His Excellency, Timipre Sylva, the Hon Minister of State for Petroleum due to the dwindling oil prices as a result of Covid-19, thus forcing the Government to look inwards for more revenue generation opportunities in the gas sector.
The good thing is that Nigeria has one of the largest cooking gas (LPG) reserves in the world and the largest in Africa at about 300-600tscf.
As you can see, MUPO Energy is on its way to becoming a major source of gas for households in Abuja and beyond. This is yet another testimony from our Ugwumba Felllows!
Through this Hope for the Youths Series, you will be amazed at how the Ugwumba Leadership Center is creating hope for the unemployed youths in Nigeria and Africa, who are gifted in various skills but do not have the required business development skills and seed capital to launch out.
Please, keep a date with us on this segment as we come back to you with another interesting testimonial from our beneficiaries, who we fondly called #UgwumbaFellows!
